Cluster amaryllis in Japan

Cluster amaryllis are blooming all over here in the middle of September. I like this flower. As a human being, cluster amaryllis would be a beautiful, noble, and very fascinating lady. Long stems that stretch out, flower shapes that are just like the beauty of art. It doesn't smell, but it attracts people very much.

On the other hand, this flower also has an alias that is reminiscent of ominous things.

You often see the flower planted in temples. Since the temple has graveyard, it may have an ominous image.

But there is a reason for that.

In fact, this flower has a poisonous.

Cremation is common in Japan now, but it used to be burial a long time ago.

Therefore,  moles living in the soil apparently often damaged the bodies.

Cluster amaryllis was planted to prevent this. Since cluster amaryllis is poisonous, it has the effect of repelling creatures such as moles.

The cluster amaryllis protected the bodies of our ancestors.

This flowers bloom at the autumn equinox season.

Cluster amaryllis is called in Japanese Higan-bana (

Equinox Flower)

Higan means the equinoctial week. And in Japan, Higan is believed to be the time when this world and other world are connected.

Other names are also very bad names: like dead flower, ghost flower, hell flower.

Elderly people tend to call it this way, and I don't think the younger generation has the image of being uncomfortable. I like this flower, I don’t have any bad image on them.

I wrote in a previous blog; flowers are very close to our life. This beautiful flower Higan-bana, also had unique meaning.

Is this flower in bloom in your country? If it is in bloom, does it have any special meaning? Do you have a bad image?

I took pictures in a park. This park has forest, a pond with Koi, commanding beautiful mountain view!
